In late June of 2021, I planted roughly 150 Blue Mistflower plants in about 750 square feet in Calhoun Falls, South Carolina (Abbeville County). The first Monarch arrived on October 2nd, a little over three months later.
Within days, the bed was drawing 100 or more Monarchs at a time. That went on for about ten days during fall migration. By mid-October, 18 different butterfly species had been photographed there, including the frame below, with 26 Monarchs in a single shot.
South Carolina is rarely mentioned when people talk about Monarch migration routes. If one dense planting could do this there, it makes me wonder what the same approach could do somewhere on the main corridor.
